Position Summary
Benshaw is seeking a highly skilled Compliance Engineer to lead certification and regulatory activities for our industry-leading soft starters, drives, and engineered control solutions. This role ensures all Benshaw products meet or exceed UL and safety regulatory requirements, supporting safe and reliable operation across industrial, OEM, and custom-engineered applications.
As a key member of the R&D team, the Compliance Engineer will guide design compliance, manage certification projects, and maintain the technical rigor that upholds Benshaw’s reputation for rugged, reliable motor control solutions.

Certification & Regulatory Compliance
- Lead UL certification efforts for solid-state motor controllers, soft starters, custom control panels, and related industrial equipment.
- Review and validate engineering designs for compliance with UL, NEC, NEMA, and internal Benshaw standards.
- Serve as the primary technical liaison with UL and other NRTLs during certification projects, audits, and Follow-Up Services.
- Evaluate engineering change requests (ECRs/ECOs) for impacts on UL certifications and guide teams toward compliant solutions.
- Define, execute, and document engineering tests required to demonstrate compliance with:
- UL 347 and UL 347A
- UL 508 and UL 508A
- UL/IEC harmonized standards such as UL 60947-4-1, plus additional applicable standards
- Perform dielectric, temperature rise, short-circuit, abnormal condition, endurance, and related testing.
- Support development of qualification test plans for new products and major design revisions.
- Troubleshoot and resolve compliance-related issues in collaboration with design, manufacturing, and quality engineering.
- Liaise directly with UL test and compliance engineers to ensure timely and accurate project execution.
- Lead technical discussions with suppliers regarding UL compliance requirements.
- Provide technical support to customers on compliance topics.
- Create and maintain compliant Technical Construction Files (TCFs), drawings, schematics, bills of material, and wiring diagrams.
- Maintain documentation on upcoming standard revisions and evaluate impact on current products.
- Support Follow-Up Services by ensuring manufacturing processes and materials remain consistent with certified construction.
- Partner with R&D to integrate compliance requirements early in the design cycle.
- Work closely with production engineering to ensure compliance of non-standardized and custom products.
- Collaborate with application engineering to develop custom solutions that meet UL labeling requirements.
- Deliver training to engineering and production teams on compliance considerations and requirements.
- Support customer-facing teams by providing compliance documentation, certifications, and technical guidance.
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related technical field.
- 10+ years of direct experience with compliance standards and certification processes.
- Strong understanding of industrial motor control, power electronics, and high-power switching technologies.
- Ability to interpret and produce schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
- Familiarity with NEC, NFPA 70E, NEMA standards, SCCR determination, and industrial control applications.
- Experience with solid-state motor controllers, soft starters, drives, or high-power industrial control systems.
- Prior involvement with UL 508A panel shop certification or equivalent.
- Experience coordinating with UL, ETL, CSA, or other NRTLs.
- Knowledge of UL 347, UL 508, and related UL/IEC standards.
- Familiarity with global compliance frameworks (CE/EMC, IEC 60947 series, etc.).
